7 miles of well-maintained hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking trails wind through the Arenal Volcano hotel’s 870-acre property, through primary and secondary rainforest, past waterfalls and across verdant pastures. Plenty of wildlife lives in the area, including three kinds of monkeys, anteaters, coatis, raccoons, deer, and more than 400 species of birds – making Arenal Observatory Lodge a preferred destination for bird watching in Costa Rica.

A daily complimentary guided morning walk offers you a chance to learn more about the forest and it’s inhabitants and the use of the pool and Jacuzzi will be inviting after you day of Arenal activities. If you are in for a challenging hike; we suggest the Cerro Chato Trail (climbing up the dormant small volcano to see a g=beautiful crater lake) that starts at the lodge.

Arenal Observatory Lodge offers a good restaurant, but you can also opt for restaurant options in la Fortuna village (about 40 minutes drive from this lodge).

The 48 Arenal Observatory Lodge guest rooms are spread in various building over the property; all are comfortable and spacious and designed for your enjoyment, with attention to the details that make the difference for a wonderful stay. Most hotel rooms have views of Arenal Volcano, a private balcony or deck, and all have verdant garden surroundings. Five rooms are fully equipped for disabled travelers. All stays include breakfast buffet and the complimentary guided morning hike.
Spacious and comfortable Standard Rooms at Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa all feature two queen-sized beds, private bathroom, coffeemaker, room safe, sitting chairs and a writing table. Some Standard Rooms located in the main hotel building are overlooking the gorgeous Costa Rica rainforest or impressive Arenal Volcano  from the private balconies  and others are located 500 meters from the main hotel building, down a moderate slope, and feature terraces with striking views of Lake Arenal.
The Smithsonian Rooms at Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa are named after the U.S. Smithsonian Institution scientists who began coming to the area in the 1970s to study the Arenal Volcano. Our lodge was originally built to accommodate the groups of scientists, students and occasional tourists who visited Arenal and La Fortuna, Costa Rica. Our Smithsonian Rooms are located either in the main hotel building, by the hotel restaurant or near the swimming pool area. Very spacious, they all showcase huge picture windows framing the majestic Arenal Volcano and beautiful rainforest and gardens. Smithsonian Rooms have two queen-sized beds (4 rooms have king-sized beds), private bathroom, private deck, coffeemaker and room safe. Five rooms are fully equipped for disabled guests with wheelchair access.
The Junior Suites at Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa, located near the restaurant, are the most spacious rooms. See Arenal Volcano right in front of you framed in grand picture windows, and enjoy the beauty of Lake Arenal from your large private terrace. For your comfort, each of these suites is furnished with two king-sized beds, a small living room, a room safe, and a mini-kitchen with a coffeemaker, mini-refrigerator and sink. Original ceramic paintings by a local artist illustrating the Arenal area’s flora and fauna decorate some of the walls.
